I bought the MIDX-20 quite along time ago to use with my GP-10, which I also have not used for a long time. Or am I wrong here?Īnd most of my devices that only have USB are class compliant, so again I would not need the MIDX-20 for those. Almost all the devices I have (regardless of manufacturer) have standard 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O and thus I would not need the MIDX-20 for those. I do not have many Boss / Roland thingies that only have non-class compliant USB. Much obliged CodeSmart, I'm more interested in connecting my SoftStep2 to my MIDX-20 and having the MIDX-20 provide 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O. Its still best solution for KMI products, as it often also provides power to the KMI Product Keith McMillen BLUE MIDI Expander is NOT a USB Host to 5pin MIDI adapter KMI employs these type jacks for cost saving and plentiful third party cable supply -but they are Not USB compliant

If you seek 5 pin MIDI I/O connectivity from any KMI product, you MUST use the official Keith McMillen BLUE MIDI Expander I/O adapter box - its a proprietary interface - as Many of the "usb" looking jacks on KMI Gear are labled "Expansion" and are NOT USB. Oops, I just read that the Keith McMillen Instruments MIDI Expander is KMI use only (it seems) but I have yet to see if any USB to MIDI box will do the trick. Oops, I just read that the The SoftStep is a class-compliant USB MIDI device so I guess that means any USB to MIDI box will do the trick.

What I have not been able to find out is whether the Keith McMillen Instruments MIDI Expander is simply a USB MIDI host box like the Camola USB MIDI Host Box, or whether the Keith McMillen Instruments MIDI Expander is a proprietary gizmo. I have a Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep 2 and the manual states I need the Keith McMillen Instruments MIDI Expander if I want 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O.
